Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating digestive tract and liver disorders. Those primarily involve pancreatic, liver, gallbladder, esophagus, thyroid, small intestine, and colon. Historically, palliative care has been underutilized for patients with decompensated liver disease. End-stage liver disease (ESLD) patients suffer from multiple symptoms due to the disease's systemic effects and recurrent acute events, which lead to a gradual decline of quality of life. Despite clear evidence that palliative care improves quality of life in other serious illnesses, palliative care is underutilized and delayed for ESLD patients.
